Who Should Install My New Pet Door?

Jack Russel with hard hat, saw, and hammer

In order to get the most out of your new RANGER energy-efficient pet door, it will have to be installed correctly. There are a few good options:

Do-it-yourself (DIY): If you have the tools and ambition, all of our doors can be installed by homeowners. Door-mounted pet doors are the easiest to install, good for even a novice who can follow the video and written instructions. Wall-mounted doors and basic doors require more extensive tools and DIY experience.

Your trusted contractor: If you have a trusted contractor, he or she would almost certainly be a good candidate for installing a RANGER Pet Door. Any good handyman can install a door-mounted pet door, but you may want to choose someone with experience installing windows for the best wall-mounted door installation.

A suggested contractor: We have a relationships with select installers, listed below.

Beware of “Dog Door Installers”

There has been a trend of low-skilled, unlicensed contractors advertising themselves as pet door installers. There are two main reasons to be cautious when engaging these people.

  • Low Skill Level – Many of these installers are accustomed to low-end pet doors with poor installation techniques. These poor techniques are fast and easy for the installer, but they skip steps that can risk major damage, especially in wall mounting situations.
  • Ulterior Motives – Many of these installers get kickbacks from other pet door companies. There have been reports of installers taking jobs only to use it as a sales pitch to try to get customers to buy a low-end pet door from them.

Obviously, not all dog door installers are bad. However, there are enough bad eggs that it makes sense to be extra-vigilant when evaluating them.

Be especially cautious with wall-mounted installations. In order to be done correctly, this requires framing, flashing, proper anchoring, and trim work. Anyone who advocates for a simple “knock a hole in the wall and screw three pieces together” type of installation should be avoided. That type of door and installation can cause serious damage to your wall envelope.

Fully-licensed contractors and handymen are typically the best options for professional installation.
